Preparing the Sunday Lunch and Dessert

Does this look like a familiar site on weekends or during game day for many families?

There is a variety of seasoned foods on the grill now, including chicken, quartered and wings, and whole onions. I am not one to grill, but having talented brother in laws, brothers and friends helps to create a delicious meal.

You thought that chicken was only on the menu? No, we can’t forget the fine cut of beef and great sausage to feed the family and friends.

Having a cook- out with family and friends is a great opportunity to visit and share a meal, old memories and make new ones.

As I watch my niece, Iliana Hinojosa, create the grapefruit pie (below), I am very glad to see that she has adopted her grandmother’s (my mother) baking ideas for the crust, using the fork. She said she heard about the pie from a local retailer and then, found a recipe on Pinterest.

As I watched her do so, I spoke to her of my father’s habit of coming home to my mother’s fresh baked pies and pinching off the crust that he would devour, even without the pie filling.

I was just a little girl, but I recall seeing his eyes light up with glee as he came in the kitchen. He would give me a kiss, and then as I sat on his lap, I saw the smile that came over his face as he would take bites of my mother’s delicious baked goods. Although she did not look too happy when he would take apart the pie crust, I think somehow deep down, she was very happy her hours spent in the hot kitchen pleased her family.

The house lacked air condition back in the day, so I now definitely know how much sacrifice went into cooking and baking for my siblings and I. Always be grateful for what you have in your life, because at some point, all we have left is the memory. Many thanks to my family for everything.

Conjunto Los Pinkys Performed During SXSW and Continue Every Sunday in Austin

Conjunto Los Pinkys performed during the SXSW Music Festival on March 15 and on the final day of SXSW on March 17th, both at the White Horse, located in East Austin. For this year’s Austin Music Awards, Conjunto Los Pinkys were nominated in the Best Latin Traditional category and were in the top ten bands.

The weekly performances at the White Horse each Sunday afternoon have a very diverse audience that enjoy the very danceable music, so SXSW attendees had twice the opportunity to enjoy this incredible talent of young and veteran performers together.
