Austin Film Festival Featured Flight, the new Denzel film in theaters this weekend

The Austin Film Festival this year had several films on their schedule that are feature films and will have a theatrical release either later this year or in 2013. The opening night film started off with Not Fade Away that I wrote about earlier here, followed by The Sessions the same evening and it is opening nationwide next month. Saturday and Sunday had at least four more feature films that are coming soon and I also suggest viewing when in theaters.

If anyone had any doubts about film fans not returning on Monday for more films if they were too tired, guess again because the new Denzel Washington film, Flight, had throngs of fans in line.

This film features Washington as Whip Whitaker, a former Navy pilot who as an experienced airline pilot saves many lives after the flight he is helming crashes. As with all crashes, there is an investigation into the malfunctions. The story is one I will not mention yet and to get to the details, read the reviews on Friday in time to plan to go see it on opening weekend.

Among the extensive list of cast members is Nadine Velasquez who stars as an airline stewardess, Katerina Marquez. She is in an opening scene that I gather many will not forget soon. It has been almost ten years since I recall first seeing Velasquez in what was probably her feature debut, Chasing Papi in 2003. Television fans may recognize her from The Bold and the Beautiful (2003), Entourage (2004) and My Name is Earl from 2005-2009.

These are but a few of the cast members who join Washington and Velasquez in this 138 minute drama: Brian Geraghty, Bruce Greenwood, John Goodman, Don Cheadle and Melissa Leo. Unfortunately, there was not a red carpet opportunity during the Austin Film Festival for this feature film with any of the cast or crew, so I have no pictures to share for this film.

If you did not get to the Paramount Theater on October 22nd, then you will soon have your opportunity in early November.

Director: Robert Zemeckis

Writer: John Gatins

Bill Cosby at Bass Concert Hall; Still Wowing Audiences

I had the opportunity to see and hear the comedic legend on October 28th at Bass Concert Hall during one of his two performances in Austin and I won’t forget the time. He sported a UT athletics uniform which the crowd was happy to see and sat through his performance. For a man in his 70s, he looked spry as he walked out, but certainly deserves to sit if he wants to as he delivers his comedy, oftentimes with just a look on his face.

I had not seen one of his stand up acts, nor had his books or CDs, but seeing him on television and film certainly had me laughing many a time.

Although he has a book on fatherhood, Cosby talked about motherhood and pain, how women make the house a home of their own and other fun stuff men endure.

Bill Cosby is one of America’s most beloved entertainers. Over the past century, few performers have achieved the legendary status of William H. Cosby, Jr. He is one of America’s most beloved entertainers with successes that span five decades and virtually all media.

In the 1960s, Cosby’s stand-up act was a coast-to-coast sensation, spawning a string of hilarious, best-selling comedy albums, which went on to garner eight Gold records, five Platinum records, and five Grammy Awards.

His role on TV’s I Spy made him the first African-American to co-star in a dramatic series, breaking television’s racial barrier and winning three Emmy Awards.

In the 1980s, he again rocked the television world withThe Cosby Show, a hugely successful series that single-handedly revived the family sitcom and NBC ratings.

With hit movies like Uptown Saturday Night and best-selling books like Fatherhood, Bill Cosby is quite simply a national treasure with the unique ability to touch people’s hearts.
