In the Fall of 2001, Monsters, Inc., made it’s theatrical debut and was super successful with audiences, going on to receive four Oscar® nominations, including Best Animated Feature Film, Best Original Score, Best Sound Editing and Best Original Song, the latter of which won the Oscar® for If I Didn’t Have You. The song is by 20-time Oscar nominee composer/songwriter Randy Newman. On June 21, 2013, nearly 12 years later, Disney•Pixar will release the film Monsters University in U.S. theaters.
The voice talent for this 3D comedy/animation feature (in select theaters) is fantastic, including well known award winning favorites, Billy Crystal and John Goodman, who reprise their roles in the prequel as Mike Wazowski and Sulley, and Helen Mirren as Dean Hardscrabble, my personal favorite as she lends a menacing voice, but totally think Crystal and Goodman’s talent works great together. Monsters University features a few returning favorites from Monsters, Inc. and new faces that will become favorites, including Steve Buscemi, Alfred Molina, John Krasinski, Dave Foley, Sean P. Hayes, Joel Murray, Peter Sohn, Charlie Day, Nathan Fillion, Bobby Moynihan, Julia Sweeney, Aubrey Plaza, Tyler Labine, Bonnie Hunt, Beth Behrs and John Ratzenberger. With talent like this together, they could talk just about anything, but instead, we have a good story and screenplay by Dan Scanlon (Cars), Daniel Gerson & Robert L. Baird that has a G rating.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and award-winning composer Randy Newman returns to provide amazing songs for Monsters University, his seventh Disney•Pixar film. It is hard not to notice the great tunes for this film as in the first and the selections are great for this story set during the time Mike and Sulley attended the university to become “scarers” and I dare not say more to spoil the story for fan favorites of the award winning film loved by many for over a decade.
I do want to extend some recognition to a few of the amazing group of artists behind the scenes to make this film pop with color and creativity that engages the audience: Carolina Lopez Dau and Jordi Oñate Isal (Spain), the Crowd Animators; Edgar Rodriguez (Puerto Rico), the Simulation TD (setting up sequences for simulation); Juan Carlos Navarro Carrion (Spain), animator for the characters; Mimia Arbalaez (Colombia) and José Ramos from (Spain), Lighting Technical Directors. All of their talent along with the long list of artists in the Animation and Visual Effects Department make this an amazing film to view on the big screen.
While I cannot say this is my all time favorite animated film, it is certainly one I would recommend taking a buddy to see the film and that buddy can be any age and still enjoy it to get some real laughs. To like Monsters University visit http://facebook.com/PixarMonstersUniversity
