The film On the Road has had several open dates scheduled for it in Austin, but to my knowledge, it did not open there yet. San Antonio’s Bijou Theaters hosted the opening of this film today and has theater listings for the whole week up through Thursday, April 4th. Looks like a road trip to San Antonio may be in order, of course, not only for this film but also for other fun things the city has to offer. I have been to the Santikos Bijou Cinema and it certainly is a fine place to watch a film and enjoy the food and beverage offerings.
The screenplay is written by Jose Rivera, based on the book by Jack Kerouac, and it is directed by Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries). The cast includes Amy Adams, Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Alice Braga, Tom Sturridge, Sam Riley and Garrett Hedlund. The film is rated R for strong sexual content, drug use and language.
Synopsis from Bijou: The life of young writer Sal Paradise is shaken and ultimately redefined by the arrival of Dean Moriarty, a free-spirited, fearless, fast talking Westerner and his girl, Marylou. Traveling cross-country, Sal and Dean venture out on a personal quest for freedom from the conformity and conservatism engulfing them in search of the unknown, themselves, and the pursuit of “it” — the pure essence of experience. Seeking unchartered terrain and the last American frontier, the duo encounter an eclectic mix of men and women – each impacting their journey indelibly.
