The Austin Film Festival held last year in October was host to many great films, including Silver Linings Playbook, that has gone on to be nominated for awards, both at the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards. Quartet screened at the Austin Film Festival and it has received nominations and awards, including one for Maggie Smith’s performance (Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Golden Globes), fellow actor, Billy Connolly, and for the film’s director, Dustin Hoffman in his debut. As for Quartet, although I do like the film with great actors and performances, I cannot say it was one of my favorites at the festival, but it will certainly have a market among those who like this genre of music and the play written by Ronald Harwood, who also wrote the screenplay for Quartet. I can’t say I didn’t have a good time viewing this film, if I have any reservation, it is because of the genre of music, but on the other hand, I think it does have a good dose of comedic moments among the drama when Jean Horton (Smith) arrives at the home for retired musicians, Beecham House.
I think it will be embraced by baby boomers who want to enjoy a bit of romantic nostalgia and for those who know that love can happen at any age.
I recommend going to see it, if not for any other reason, but to take in the directorial debut of Dustin Hoffman. See this and keep wondering what else is coming our way!!
