Sunday Night Jazz at Strange Brew Lounge Side; Adds Established Musicians for Residency

Strange Brew Lounge Side continues to grow as South Austin’s new listening room adding established Austin musicians to their calendar such as Jimmy LaFave (January 25) and Van Wilks (Thursday residency). Other returning or continuing acts include Sunday Night Jazz with sets from Jeff Lofton and Brannen Temple (ongoing), Alex Ruiz and the Night Mothers (Wednesday residency), and Durawa, Texas Tornados’ Grammy-winning drummer Ernie Durawa’s trio (Tuesday residency).

Jeff Lofton 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Jazz trumpeter, composer and band leader Jeff Lofton studied composition at the University of South Carolina and moved to Austin in 2007. Since then he’s been voted Best Jazz Band at the ’10-’11 Austin Music Awards during SXSW; January 15, 2009 was named “Jeff Lofton Day” by the City of Austin; and he was inducted into the Texas Music Museum. The Austin American-Statesman’s 2010 Out and About 500: Music list noted his “ubiquitous presence and articulate advocacy.” His album, “Jazz to the People,” made the 2009 top albums lists for the Austin Chronicle and KUT.

At the weekly Sunday Gospel Brunch with the Purgatory Players, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., some of Austin’s most celebrated musicians raise  money for the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas. The usual players are  Jeff Plankenhorn, Scrappy Jud Newcomb, John Dee Graham and Conrad  Choucroun and sometimes special guest that have included- Malford  Milligan, David Grissom, Guy Forsyth, Paul Mills, Warren Hood, Darcie  Deaville, Paul Mills, Jon Greene, Seela Misra and more.

The room’s early success led owner Scott Ward to revamp the room to add more seating. Details will be announced soon, but improvements include a larger stage and the addition of a piano and an organ. With a full schedule of music seven days a week, music fans are enjoying a great sound system, easy free parking and the friendly wait staff serving food, beer and wine from the Strange Brew Austin Coffee menu next door. Open 24/7 the menu includes pastries and sandwiches.
