During American Diabetes Month® in November, Salud Corporation announces its first product to help members of the Latino community eat and live healthy. Aceite de Oliva Paloma, produced in Central Texas in partnership with the Texas Hill Country Olive Oil Co., is a top-quality extra virgin olive oil that will be available at an affordable price, making it accessible to lower- and moderate-income households, with branding that is familiar to Hispanics.
Studies have shown that true extra virgin olive oil (also referred to as “EVOO”) offers numerous health benefits, such as improving cardiac health, lowering blood pressure, protecting against certain common cancers, and lowering the concentration of “bad” cholesterol. According to the American Diabetes Association, nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes.
Another 79 million Americans have pre-diabetes and are at risk for developing type-2 diabetes. In January of 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 13.2% of Hispanics have diabetes, compared to 7.6% of Non-Hispanic Whites. The National Council of La Raza recently published “The Food Environment and Latino’s Access to Healthy Foods” as part of their 2010 Profiles of Latino Health. Findings showed that Hispanic families are less likely than non-Hispanic White families to live in neighborhoods where healthy food is available and sold at affordable prices.
Salud, a minority-owned and Latina-managed company, was formed in 2012 by the nonprofit Business & Community Lenders of Texas as a social enterprise to promote healthy nutrition and habits. In addition, Salud will donate a portion of Paloma product earnings to women, minority and veteran owned small businesses in Texas, and it will create permanent job opportunities in the Tree-to-Table industry.
“My mother was my Paloma,” says Rosa Rios Valdez, President of Salud. “She died 23 years ago from diabetes complications. My mother encouraged me to seek opportunities to create better communities. Aceite de Oliva Paloma was created to honor all our Palomas and foster the well-being of our families.”
Rios Valdez’ farm-to-table experience began as a child when her father worked as a Bracero in the Texas winter garden fields and brought home local produce. As a University of Texas graduate, Rios Valdez has worked with agribusiness and food producers for over twenty years. After seeing her mother suffer from diabetes, she has committed to promoting healthy lifestyles in the Latino community.
The first sample bottles will available by the end of November, and they will be available publicly to wholesalers and retailers by mid-December.

American Diabetes Month® 2012 Overview
The vision of the American Diabetes Association is a life free of diabetes and all of its burdens. Raising awareness of this ever-growing disease is one of the main efforts behind the mission of the Association. American Diabetes Month (ADM) is an important element in this effort, with programs designed to focus the nation’s attention on the issues surrounding diabetes and the many people who are impacted by the disease. In 2012, the Association will launch a socially-focused initiative for American Diabetes Month to demonstrate the increasing impact diabetes has on our families and communities nationwide.
The campaign will encompass a host of online and offline program elements. At its core, the campaign is a call to action for individuals to take a public stand, via our social media channels and through American Diabetes Association online properties, to support the movement to Stop Diabetes®. Using imagery, the power of social engagement and a larger-than-life stage, we will shine a new light on the issue of diabetes and those who live with it each and every day, highlighting the Association and corporations focused on stopping this insidious disease.
