Cinematographer Peter Simonite at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF)

Peter Simonite’s 50-plus films credits include THE FACULTY, IDIOCRACY, SKATELAND and Terrence Malick’s visually arresting TREE OF LIFE, to which Peter lent his talents as the second unit cinematographer.  Peter will be at TIFF representing five of his upcoming films (full list below).  Each of the films will be screening throughout TIFF, including the stunning video he directed for the band Explosions In The Sky, titled POSTCARD FROM 1952.

After faking his own death and adopting a new identity, a depressed divorcee (Colin Firth) meets a troubled young woman (Emily Blunt) who spurs him on to new heights of playacting during a cross-country spree of life-swapping and bed-hopping.

An impoverished young couple (Juno Temple and Michael Angarano) stumble upon an antique teapot that magically dispenses cash whenever either of them feels pain, inspiring them to ever-greater extremes, as they ascend the ranks of the nouveau riche. Director Ramaa Mosley eschews violence for a more whimsical, Tim Burton-esque treatment in this offbeat, darkly funny satire.

Inspired by found family snapshots from the 1950s, “Postcard From 1952” is a seven minute journey through memories of life magnified by time.  As the filmmakers expand and explore these frozen moments, deeper human stories reveal themselves from within the details.
