El Mariachi Anniversary Screening and Chingon’s Music in Austin on August 30th

AMD, Austin Film Society and El Rey Network are excited to present the 20th Anniversary Celebration of Robert Rodriguez’s EL MARIACHI, on Thursday, August 30th at The Paramount Theatre at 7:30 PM.

The evening will feature a special 35mm screening of Rodriguez’s landmark first feature, EL MARIACHI, preceded by the exclusive debut of the director’s early short film, ISMAEL JONES AND THE EYES OF THE DEVIL, which he made at age 16 with EL MARIACHI star Carlos Gallardo. Following a Q&A, Rodriguez and his band, Chingón, will perform songs from his movies, DESPERADO through MACHETE, as the corresponding film clips play behind the band on an enhanced digital screen.

EL MARIACHI is a 1992 American action film that was the debut of writer/director Robert Rodriguez. El Mariachi (played by Carlos Gallardo) is a traveling musician who wanders into a small mob-run town where he is mistaken for a notorious hit man known for carrying his weapons in a guitar case. In 2011, the film was inducted into the Library of Congress to be preserved as part of its National Film Registry for being culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant.
The Host Committee is: Kip McClanahan (Chair), Kate Hersch, Giselle Koy, Tim & Karrie League, Edward Z. Safady and Ali Watson. Proceeds from this event benefit the Texas Filmmakers’ Production Fund, established by Richard Linklater in 1996, which has granted $1.2 million to emerging Texas filmmakers. The 2012 grants will be announced in late August.
